Iditarod Cachets
The following is a listing and approximate values of all
the Iditarod Trail Mail to date. Mail over the trail starts with it's first
year in 1974 and continues yet today.

1974 Cachet
52,880 known to go over the trail by dog team and over 12,000 of those destroyed by the USPS. 1,200 cachets carried by each musher from Anchorage to Nome; a 12# package. Cachet design by famed Fur Rondy Artist Bill Devine also creator of the Iditarod "I". This cachet carries Iditarod "I" cancel on 10 cent US Dual Flag Stamp and is back stamped on date of finish. Many signed by musher/s after the finish in Nome, 1st place packet sold out and others used for first place musher to sign as well. Other than back date, there is no real way which ones were carried by whom. All cachets are back stamped in Nome with the musher finish date, only one postage cancelation on front of cachet. This project intended to raise funds for the Iditarod was accomplished mostly through U.S. Postal personnel and some Iditarod volunteers. This proved to be such a burden for the "volunteer" poor ITC that it like many things in Iditarod history was scapped before it's worth could be proven.
